Getting Ready to Learn

Bligh's Lane Nursery has been part of the Getting Ready to Learn initiative since its inception in 2016. We cover all of the four themes which aim to help parents support their children as they grow. The themes are:

Big Bedtime Read

We begin this theme with a parent workshop on the importance of reading. We invite our parents to come into class on any day to share a book with their child and their friends. We also offer every family a pack of five books which they can borrow weekly on a Friday.

Ages and Stages

In this theme we concentrate on how children are developing and if there are any concerns or issues. Parents can raise concerna at our mid-year parent teacher meetings and teachers can offer advice and support as necessary. If there has been a huge demand for this service a workshop has been offered which is delivered by Mrs O'Doherty. Drop in 'clinic' style support has also been offered as part of this theme.

We offer home learning packs as part of this theme, particularly focused on play skills and fine motor skills. Staff give advice on how to use the packs and many parents have reported great successes with using them at home.

Happy Healthy Kids

This theme is integral to everything we do at Bligh's Lane Nursery. We continually offer parents advice around their child's eating, lifestyle and sleeping habits. Parents regularly approach staff informally to seek advice but also during parent teacher consultations.

A workshop on healthy eating, focusing particularly on the suagr content of food and drink, is offered in the Summer Term.

Education Works in Pre-School

This theme is weaved through all of our curriculum offerings in Bligh's Lane Nursery School. Staff are always available to speak to,and advise, parents on all learning matters. Learning aids are sent home with children when they have our book of the month to guide parents on how best to engage their children. Newsletters provide ideas and suggestions of how parents can help their child at home.

The Getting Ready to Learn project seeks to support pre-school education providers with DE-funded places to encourage and develop parental involvement in children's early learning. It is focused on improving outcomes for children in pre-school by engaging and empowering parents to help them create and sustain positive home learning environments.
